So, You Want to Try Vertical Farming?

Vertical farming is a fairly new addition to the Dawsongroup temperature controlled solutions offering, but it is a solution that has taken off in spades since its launch and for good reason too. The beauty of Vertical farming is how under specifically controlled conditions you can grow plants indoors within many vertically stacked layers.

Harnessing the power of LED lighting, vertical farming doesn’t rely on sunlight (like glasshouse production), and its LED lighting provides light wavelengths corresponding to crop and growth stage requirements.

In terms of advantages of vertical farming, increased crop yield from a small unit is possible while also being able to obtain consistent yields and high-quality produce for 365 days a year. With the Irish weather being so unpredictable, and its ability to change momentarily from extreme to adverse weather conditions can affect the quality and quantity of crops, which is a considerable issue.

From an operational efficiency standpoint, human intervention is minimal and vertical farming doesn’t need pesticides such is the efficacy of the controlled environment. Traceability is guaranteed and product integrity is achieved which is good news for busy food supply chains which need to be secure to meet their challenging targets. Furthermore, the environmental impact is reduced, and the supply of safe and healthy food is provided easier than ever before.
